Welcome to classic music in the countryside! – The Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Music Festival

‘Imagine – fantastic concerts and top performers set against an atmospheric and architecturally historic landscape that stretches as far as the eye can see; a superb cultural experience all topped off by a delicious culinary treat’. This is the secret of the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Music Festival’s success. Since 1990 the Festival, which is the third largest music festival in Germany with over 100 concerts a year, has been held during the summer months. Every year it features music of the highest level by renowned soloist, conductors, orchestras and choirs as well as the international ‘Young Musical Elite’ which has enthralled audiences across over 60 state-wide stage venues, from the ‘Klützer Winkel’ to ‘Usedom’. Over the years the Festival has become one of the most prestigious in Germany.

The musical journey through Mecklenburg-Vorpommern starts this year in one of the most modern and, at the same time, most fascinating concert halls of the country, the “Konzertkirche” in Neubrandenburg and ends in the “Heilig-Geist-Kirche” of the old Hanseatic City of Wismar (a World Cultural Heritage site). However, most of the stages and venues are situated outside the famous cities of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, with many concerts being held in the more intimate settings such as idyllic manor houses and small village churches, as well as in local stone or cobble barns.

Some of the stages and venues have already become permanent fixtures within the German musical landscape and meccas for admirers of classical music from all over Germany and abroad. One such venue is Ulrichshusen, a village of 35 inhabitants – which has seen the unforgettable concerts given by Yehudi Menuhin, Anne-Sophie Mutter, Natalia Gutman and Mstislaw Rostropowitsch. An exciting aspect of the Festival is that people get to discover new venues each year, alongside the more established and traditional venues.
